Youth as Gatekeepers

“The Youth as Gatekeepers (YAG) program is a mental health literacy and suicide prevention program that is being implemented within the Chilliwack School District. It is sponsored by the F.O.R.C.E. Society for Kids’ Mental Health and supported by the Chilliwack Ministry for Children and Family Development.

The goal of the project is to prepare students for difficult conversations as they spontaneously arise—so that they are cognisant of mental health matters, assist in reducing stigma related to mental illness, and are aware of who to talk to when there are concerns. To address this mandate, YAG works with small groups of interested students within each school by supporting, educating, and fostering their leadership skills. These students then use their knowledge to collaboratively create presentations to present to their peers, students in middle school, and the surrounding community. Our vision is that every young person is equipped to know what to do and who to go to if someone they know is struggling. To learn more about the program and see what Chilliwack youth have to say,”
